Data, AI, Sustainability: Innovation in Research and Laboratories. The BioHub Experience

The Emilia-Romagna BioHubs Network is a regional alliance designed to bridge the gap between regional biotechnology stakeholders and ongoing European strategic initiatives by establishing a regional network of competence centers dedicated to biotech development.

Through a series of targeted actions, this initiative contributes to the UN 2030 Agenda goals and the European Green Deal.

The network brings together several thematic BioHubs specializing in various biotechnology fields—including biopharmaceuticals, precision fermentation, bioinformatics, and advanced materials—with the objective of building an integrated regional infrastructure to support biotech innovation.

The network currently comprises six BioHubs: BioSpac-ER Hub, Medtech Hub, Theranostic Hub, Data on AI for Medicine Hub, BioFood Hub, and Translational Hub.

Beyond driving research, collaboration, and industry engagement, the network addresses cross-cutting issues of strategic importance, such as environmental, social, and economic sustainability in research activities. Within this context, special focus is given to the role of artificial intelligence, as well as data management and valorization, as tools to foster more efficient, responsible, and sustainable research and innovation processes.

Session Overview

In this session, representatives from the BioHubs will discuss how networking contributes to advancing research and strengthening collaboration within their respective fields, while establishing shared approaches to address cross-cutting challenges of mutual interest.
